Summer Send Off

Did this summer just fly by or what?! Labor Day is next weekend, which unfortunately means end of the summer is here (okay, I know technically it’s over September 22 but still). Summer is definitely my favorite time of year, but I am looking forward to some cooler weather. Fun fact, America has been celebrating Labor Day on the first Monday of every September since June of 1884. Labor Day is dedicated to the achievement of hard working Americans everywhere. It’s one of the few holidays that isn’t religious or devoted to a single person or historical event. It’s basically a 3 day weekend that celebrates the fact that people work. If America is good at one thing, it’s finding an excuse to have a party! Even though summer is winding down, there are still plenty of things to look forward to like football season (go Falcons!), nice fall weather, pretty leaves, soup, and pumpkin spice everything. But we aren’t quiet there yet!

I hope you have time to squeeze in one last quick summer get away or are planning a final end of summer bash this weekend! I’ve put together an easy recipe and some great game ideas to help you get that Labor Day party planning taken care of!

Stromboli

Stromboli is basically pizza in sandwich form, just as delicious and even easier to eat. This recipe never fails to be a crowd pleaser and is easy to customize. You can also make multiple variations in case some of your guests don’t eat meat and need a veggie option or you just have some picky kiddos! Fill it with anything you like, I used ham and pepperoni for this recipe!

*Also great for upcoming football tailgates!

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 tube of pre-made refrigerated pizza dough
  • 12 slices of ham
  • 15-20 slices of pepperoni
  • ½ cup of pizza sauce
  • ¾ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 container of Original Gordo’s Cheese Dip
  • 1 egg beaten
  • Garlic powder, parmesan, Italian blend seasoning

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Lay down some parchment paper and roll out the pizza dough, stretching it into a large rectangle. Spread the pizza sauce all over the dough leaving a little room on the edges. Lay down your preferred meat, in the case it is the ham and pepperoni, and then evenly distribute the shredded cheese over the meat. Heat up some of the Gordo’s Cheese Dip. Use a spoon and drizzle as much of the delicious queso as your heart desires over the meat and cheese. Roll up the dough, like you would roll up a cinnamon roll and then pinch and fold the edges so it is sealed all the way around. Lay the seam side down and brush the top with the egg, then sprinkle garlic powder, parmesan, and the Italian seasoning over the top. Bake it in the oven for 15-20 minutes until the crust is golden brown. Serve warm with pizza sauce or more queso for dipping.

Another good option for a dipping sauce for this is Gordo’s Spicy Ranch Dip. Mix one 1 oz package of spicy ranch dressing mix into 1 container of Gordo’s Cheese Dip to taste. You can dip the stromboli in the spicy ranch dip or serve it with veggies, chips or crackers.

Add A Yard Game

Make sure you’re taking advantage of the heat while you still can. Have some fun in the sun at your Labor Day party by breaking out a new game! If you have a group of active friends, set up slip and slide kickball. That’s right, it’s all the fun of kickball mixed with slipping and sliding your way to home.

Here’s how to set it up. Get 4 slip n slides or 4 long plastic drop clothes, these will serve as the baselines. For the bases you will need 4 kiddie pools half filled with water. Create a baseball diamond with the drop cloths / slip n slides and place the kiddie pools for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and home base. Put some dish soap and water on the tarps to make them easy to slide on and PLAY BALL! It is such a blast and puts a fun spin on a classic backyard game! Some other great yard games you can break out are corn hole (or bags depending on where you’re from), spike ball, and ladder toss.

You got the food, you got the games, and now you’re ready to send off summer in style. Whatever you get into this Labor Day weekend, stay safe out there!
