One reason why I enjoy summer so much is the abundance of fresh fruit to choose from.  The most popular berry fruit is the strawberry.  Fresh strawberrries are available in abundance April through July.

Strawberries are packed with anti-oxidant rich phenols.  This makes a strawberry a heart healthy fruit, an anti-cancer fruit and an anti-inflammatory fruit.  A whole medicine cabinet rolled into one tiny, tasty fruit.

Strawberries are very perishable and can only be stored for 2 days in the refrigerator.  Choose berries that are firm, plump, red in color and have no traces of mold.  Do not cut strawberries until right before you are ready to use them.

Enjoy strawberries by adding them to salads, yogurt or cereal.  Use them on top of waffles or pancakes.  Toss them into smoothies or just eat them with a sprinkling of sugar.  However you like them, the time to enjoy the freshest berries is now!
