Celebrating Your MVP: Mom
Thursday, May 8, 2014
Great Mother’s Day stories can come from the most unusual places. Such is the case this year.
The most heart-warming and reported story about Mom this year comes from the National Basketball Association – more specifically from the Most Valuable Player of the NBA, Kevin Durant. Gordo’s Cheese Dip is pleased to share it with you.
Durant lit up the basketball court this season. As a result, the Oklahoma City Thunder star got 119 first place votes. Miami’s LaBron James, who had won the last two MVP awards, came in second place with 6 first place votes. Durant, who averaged 32.0 points, 7.4 rebounds and 5.5 assists, becomes the first player to win both the scoring title and the MVP award in the same season since Allen Iverson did it in 2000-01.
Kevin Durant’s exploits on the court, while brilliant, pale in comparison to his acceptance speech during the MVP awards ceremony, at least as far as mothers around the world are concerned. In a show of heart-felt emotion, Durant told the world why his mother – Wanda Pratt – who as a 21-year old, single mother of two boys kept the family fed, clothed and motivated to excel, was the real MVP.
If you haven’t seen this amazing tribute, you owe it to yourself to watch it. Be warned that you might need a tissue or two before Kevin is through talking about the sacrifices his mother made for him and his brother. You can see an excerpt of his speech which has been downloaded millions of times from YouTube by clicking: HERE

Gifts for Mom
It’s always hard to find the right gift for Mother’s Day. What can you get for someone who has helped you become the person you are today? It’s hard.
Gordo’s has some ideas to consider. How about:
Mom’s 365 Day Gift Jar – Slips of paper with chores (mom hates) to be done by her thankful children. Mom gets to pick one each day.
A video production (shot with a cameraphone) of mom’s kids or grandkids telling her what she means to them.
Chocolate candy (you can never go wrong giving mom chocolate candy)
Something hand-made by her kids (the best mother’s day gifts are usually the least expensive)
Kevin Durant was Right
Your mom, like his, is the MVP in your life. You will never have someone like your mom. Treasure her while you have her.
Happy Mother’s Day from Gordo’s!
